A lactation consultant is a trained professional who specializes in helping parents breastfeed their babies. They provide education, support, and guidance to help mothers overcome any breastfeeding challenges they may face.
There are a variety of lactation specialist credentials: CLC (Certified Lactation Counselor) CLE (Certified Lactation Educator), BPC (Breastfeeding Peer Counselor), IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) and more. Each has their own criteria and scope of practice.
An International Board Certified Lactation Consultant has passed an exam after completing formal lactation education, college level coursework, extensive clinical experience with breastfeeding parents and babies, and must recertify every 5 years with continuing education credits. Reset assured, an IBCLC has the highest level of expertise in breastfeeding management!
While many mothers are able to breastfeed successfully without assistance, some may require the support of a lactation consultant. If you are experiencing pain, difficulty latching, or other breastfeeding challenges, it may be helpful to schedule a consultation with More Than Milk .
The cost of a lactation consultation varies depending on the provider and your insurance coverage. At More Than Milk, I accept most insurance plans, which means there is no cost you you! For those out of network I can receive direct payment and provide you with a super-bill that you can submit for reimbursement from your insurance provider. Reimbursement is not guaranteed. Initial visits are $200, Follow up visits $175. See my rates document for more info. Additional travel fees apply for visits more than 20 miles outside of Manhattan, KS. Travel fees are not typically include or covered by insurance.
Upon arrival, I'll wash my hands and greet you, your baby, and any support people you want present for our visit. We will review the consent form and discuss the concerns you have about feeding your baby. I will collect a history of information including your birth experience, first feedings, and current feeding experience. I'll visually examine your breasts, your baby, and possibly weigh your infant. If necessary, I may perform an oral examination of your baby if that is relevant to your concern. I will observe a feeding and offer verbal and physical corrections and feedback to optimize your latch and infants feed. We will review all of your breastfeeding questions. Together, we'll establish a care plan for you to move forward with. In the days to follow your visit, I will check in via text or phone call to determine your progress. From there, we can decide if additional visits are needed!
To prepare, we will plan to meet at a time when you infant will be ready to eat. If you use any lactation products, have them available to examine: your pump, bottles, shields, etc.
